Audio Distribution Server
The Client
Karrer Simpson Funeral Home has been a family owned and managed business in Port Huron, Michigan since 1905.
The Challenge
Bring the audio management system at the funeral home into the 21st century and allow playback of popular digital music formats that are increasingly common. Service events held at a funeral home require music and voice amplification. When multiple services are scheduled simultaneously, care needs to be taken to ensure that the right music is played and at the appropriate time. The requirements for the audio system at Karrer Simpson included the following:
- playback multiple audio sources simultaneously
- the ability to direct selected audio to specific zones
- conversion of all music to digital formats to eliminate the need for tape and CD players
- management of a digital music library
- creation of play lists for use at services
- capability to record service audio
- compatibility to play digital media supplied by clients
- intuitive control of the system
The Solution
Huron Data Solutions created a media management server that controls audio playback and recording throughout the building. The GNU/Linux based system utilizes the latest software from the Open Source community including: mpd, gmpc, pulseaudio, audacity, and alsa. Many of the software packages have been customized to meet the unique needs of an audio distribution system.
Music playback and audio recording throughout the building can be controlled on the server console itself or using a networked control client running on a PC or Smart Phone.
